Harnessing server waste heat using heat exchangers

Nearly 100% of electricity used in data centers is converted into heat. Until now, this waste heat has usually been released into the environment unused. With regulations such as the german Energieeffizienzgesetz (EnEfG), operators are increasingly required to capture and utilize waste heat efficiently.

Custom-designed heat exchangers enable the recovery of waste heat from data centers for applications such as building heating and hot water production. This helps reduce energy costs, improve efficiency, and increase sustainability.

Our Solution: Custom-Made Stainless Steel Heat Exchangers for Data Centers

For over 40 years, we have been developing and manufacturing heat exchangers for customers across Germany and the EU. This experience across multiple industries enables us to design highly customized solutions for data center applications.

Our heat exchangers enable efficient waste heat recovery from server rooms, for example for building heating and hot water production. This helps operators reduce energy costs, meet the requirements of the german Energieeffizienzgesetz (EnEfG), and improve overall data center efficiency.

With our custom-engineered approach, we adapt each system to the specific requirements of your facility, enabling the efficient use of otherwise unused heat.

Our stainless steel heat exchangers are durable, low-maintenance, and designed for economical and sustainable waste heat utilization, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers.

Case Study: Heat Exchangers for a Data Center in Mainz (Germany)

A data center project developer from Wallern (Austria), specialized in data center design across Europe, commissioned Viesel to manufacture four custom heat exchangers for a data center in Mainz.

The entire engineering process, including calculation, design, and draftin, was carried out in-house. To meet the required delivery timeline, we worked with an established production partner for manufacturing.

Key challenges included the procurement of fully customized components and the production of oversized heat exchangers, which required careful logistical planning, handling, and secure transportation.

Conclusion

Despite challenging conditions, ranging from custom manufacturing to logistical hurdles, the project was completed on time, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards thanks to our technical expertise, flexible manufacturing processes, and seamless collaboration with partners. A complete success — for our client, for the environment, and for the future of sustainable data centers.
