Compact design – high efficiency
U-tube bundle heat exchanger from Viesel
The U-tube heat exchanger is a version of the tube bundle heat exchanger. The advantages lie within its compact design and is therefore very efficient. Heat stress can be compensated for due to the U-shape.
The internal tube bundle has a U-shape for U-tube heat exchangers, hence its name. As for the straight tube heat exchangers, very thin single tubes are guided straight through a large pipe.
A U-tube heat exchanger is used mostly according to the counterflow principle. For heat transport according to the counterflow principle, hot and cold medium flow in opposing directions. As a result, heat recovery of almost 100% is achieved. Counterflow heat exchangers therefore have a very high efficiency level.
Due to the bent individual tubes, a heat exchanger with U-tube bundles require significantly less space than a straight tube heat exchanger with the same design. U-tube heat exchangers also only generate a low pressure loss during operation. Corrosion and deposits can be minimised by using stainless steel. The number of maintenance intervals is thus drastically reduced. In addition a replacement of a worn tube bundle is possible.
Good compensation of heat stress
If the input temperature of the two media differ extremely, the material and construction must absorb very large heat stresses. The metal expands simultaneously at different points and to different extents as a result of the temperature difference and cracks can arise for an incorrect design.
The heat exchanger can compensate such heat stresses extremely well due to the U-shape of the tube bundle and is therefore well suited for operation with two output media at very different temperatures.
Grooves or baffles (so-called baffle plates) are incorporated in the tube bundle heat exchangers to further optimise the heat exchange.
